Top 12 Careers for the Future

Careers of the future

When trying to find the right career for you, one of the most important factors to consider about each option is its future potential. Some career fields are booming — and will continue to boom well into the future. And you could boost your chances of career success by targeting one of these booming fields.

The following are 15 of the best jobs for the future. They have been chosen based on employment projections made by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (to identify careers that will grow tremendously through 2020), wages and salaries, and the level of education required to land a job.

1. Physician/surgeon

The need for physicians and surgeons will continue to increase as the population grows by several millions each year. In addition to job openings from employment growth, openings will result from the need to replace the relatively high number of physicians and surgeons expected to retire over the 2008-2018 decade.

The level of training required to become a licensed doctor is one of the most difficult, but the potential pay-off is very high.

Depending on whether they are neural surgeons or general practitioners, doctors’ salaries range widely, but they are without exception lucrative. Of the different kinds of doctors, the lowest median wage is $94,000, with the top tier making more than $250,000

2. Registered nurse

While the number of doctors and surgeons in the U.S. is expected to increase by close about 150,000 by year 2018, the number of nurses is expected to explode, given the fact that there are up to five nurses to one doctor.

In addition, the demand for nursing care is expected to increase because the number of older people, who are much more likely than younger people to need nursing care, is projected to grow rapidly.

To become a registered nurse, you need a bachelor of science in nursing (usually a 4-year program), a diploma from an accredited nursing program (2-3years), or an associate’s degree in nursing (2-4 years).

An advanced position, such as a nursing practitioner requires a master’s degree. You also need a license to practice. And it goes without saying that you need to be patient and compassionate.

3. Systems software developer

The computerization of everything — from cell phones to coffee makers — has increased the demand for software developers and other tech gurus. Also, the booming demand for more sophisticated cyber security and digital record systems would provide new jobs for techies.

So, application software developers, who create everything from word processing programs to apps for tablets and smart phones would remain relevant for several years to come.

The basic requirement for most software development jobs is a college degree in computer science or software engineering. Some employers may even require a master’s degree. Either way, you need a strong background in programming, and you must be able to keep abreast of changes in the field, such as the introduction of new tools and computer languages.

4. Plumber

With the construction of new buildings and the need to increase water efficiency by installing low-flow toilets and faucets, the demand for plumbing services is expected to grow markedly.

Even in tight economic times, maintaining and repairing plumbing installations remain a necessity — and this only adds more security to the job.

To become a plumber, you need to enroll for a 4 to 5-year apprenticeship, which requires you to be at least 18 years old and to possess basic math and computer skills. (You can find plumbing apprenticeships in your area through the U.S. Department of Labor.) Depending on the requirements of your state, you may need to be licensed.

5. Electrician

The need for increased connectivity at home and at the office is boosting the demand for electricians. Similarly, the growing demand for alternative sources of energy, such as solar and wind power means more work for electricians. New construction and housing renovation will also drive the growth of this occupation.

To become an electrician, you need to start with a 4-year apprenticeship, which usually requires you to be at least 18 years old, have  high school diploma (or its equivalent), have a qualifying aptitude score, and have drug-free clearance.

You can find registered apprenticeship programs for electricians in your area through the U.S. Department of Labor. Most states require you to be licensed.

6. Personal financial advisor

As more baby boomers reach their peak years of retirement savings, personal investments are expected to increase, and more people will need expert advice.

By 2018, the number of personal financial advisors is expected to increase by 60,000 (a 30% growth from 2008). This growth rate exceeds the 10% national job growth average.

To become a personal financial advisor, you need a college degree, such as a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, or a related field. However, most employers don’t require a specific major.

Getting a certification from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards — which requires a bachelor’s degree, at least three years of relevant work experience, and passing a rigorous exam on a wide range of financial issues — would add to your credibility. In addition, licensing is required to sell certain types of investment and insurance products.

7. Physical therapy assistant

As the baby boomers, who form a huge fraction of the population, grow older, there is increased demand for those working in physical therapy.

More physical therapists are needed to take care of heart attack and stroke patients by leading them through cardiac and physical rehabilitation. And with ongoing advances in medicine, more people will survive such traumas and need rehabilitative services.

In terms of pay and required training, physical therapists fall between the full-fledged physiotherapists and the lower-skilled therapist aides. While a physiotherapist needs a doctoral degree, a physical therapy assistant needs just an associate’s degree.

8. Computer network administrator

With the increasing number of hackers, cyber security issues, and other digital dangers comes a booming demand for network administrators, whose job is to beef up information security.

Even hospitals and doctors’ offices will need help in expanding their networks and keeping health records digitally. And firms will invest in newer and faster systems, too.

You will need a background in computer and information science to get started as a network administrator. You may also need a degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. Some employers require a certification in specific programs by Microsoft, Cisco, or Red Hat.

9. Dental hygienist

The number of dentists and dental assistant jobs are expected to increase by 20.7% and 30.8%, respectively. In 2008, there were roughly 175,000 dental hygienists in the U.S. By 2018, that number is expected to increase to nearly 240,000 — an increase of more than 36%. So, those in this field have a great deal to smile about.

The demand for dental services will grow because of population growth, older people increasingly retaining more teeth, and a growing emphasis on preventative dental care.

Becoming a dental hygienist requires a 2-year associate degree in dental hygiene, which requires you to study anatomy, physiology, nutrition, radiography and periodontology. A license is also required, but requirements vary by state.

10. Civil engineer

Engineering jobs in general are expected to grow at the national job growth average of 10%, but the number of civil engineers is projected to grow at a rate 2.5 times faster. This is because civil engineering — which involves overseeing transportation, municipal and industrial infrastructure development — is the most closely linked with population growth. By 2018, there will be nearly 70,000 new civil engineering positions in the U.S.

Becoming a civil engineer requires a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Some employers require even advanced degrees or certifications.

11. Market research analyst

Over the next decade, market research analysts will be in hot demand, and the specialty will experience faster growth rate than the national job growth average. This is because the ever-tightening competition between businesses seeking to expand their market and sell more products will generate a growing need for marketing professionals.

By 2018, there will be more than 70,000 new market research analyst positions.

Becoming a market research analyst requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, although a master’s or Ph.D is helpful.

12. Accountant/auditor

Only few businesses do not require the services of an accountant to manage their books, tax payments, and prepare financial statements. To date, there are more than a million accountants and auditors in the U.S., and that number is expected to grow by more than 250,000.

An increase in the number of businesses, changing financial laws and corporate governance regulations, and increased accountability for protecting an organization’s stakeholders will drive job growth.

Becoming a certified accountant requires at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field as well as certification. But accountants have a median annual income of more than $60,000, with the top tier making more than $100,000.
