How to Get a Job in Department of State Services (DSS)

Published

on

DSS Recruitment – http://www.dss.gov.ng

The State Security Service (SSS), otherwise known as the Department of State Services (DSS), is an intelligence agency of Nigeria which takes care of primary internal intelligence and micro domestic security breaches. It is core function of the SSS is to gather intelligence within the country as well as to protect senior government officials, particularly the President and state governors. The SSS functions as a department within the presidency and is regulated by the National Security Adviser.

Origin of The SSS

Before June 1986, Nigeria had what was known as the National Security Organization (NSO) which performed tripartite functions which today have been spread across The State Security Service (SSS), The National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) courtesy of the Ibrahim Babangida administration of 1986.

See: How to Get a Job in Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA)

It was in 1986, during his first national address as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that Gen. Ibrahim Babangida issued Decree Number 19, which dissolved and re-structured Nigeria’s security services into three separate entities under the Office of the Coordinator of National Security. This was in fulfillment of one of his promises as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The SSS (i.e., DSS), NIA, and DIA

So, while The State Security Service (SSS) or Department of State Services (DSS)takes care of domestic intelligence, The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) oversees external intelligence and counterintelligence while The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) handles military-related intelligence outside and inside Nigeria.

Headquarters and Administration

The first headquarters of the SSS was located at 15, Awolowo road, Ikoyi in Lagos where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office is presently located. Presently, the SSS headquarters is located in the northern edge of the three-arms zone on Aso drive in Maitama, Abuja and is informally known as the “Yellow House”.

As of 2018, the SSS is headed by Yusuf MagajiBichi, appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in September, 2018.
